Marcel Goldman
Born in Poland in Krakov 1926.
Marcel was just thirteen years old when the Germans invaded Poland in September 1939.
Marcel was the oldest of three children. He had two younger sisters, Nellie and Roza. Learned at St Wojciech Primary School and there, first encountered discrimination. He was ridiculed harassed by his peers for bringing a challah for lunch that Sara his mother prepared for him. So Max his father and Sara decided to send him to a Hebrew school instead, but his education was interrupted when the Germans invaded Poland.
In 1941, the Goldmans were sent to a ghetto in Podgorze. After the incident that Sara’s parents and sister were captured during one of the actions in the ghetto , Max Goldman decided that the family must leave the ghetto.
With help of a Christian friend that used to work for him, before his shop was confiscated by the Germans. He was able to get Aryan papers with the surname Galas for his family, and in September 1942 the Goldman family succeeded and were able to run away to Radom.
In 1947 Max and Sara had plans to emigrate to Palestine , and tried to convince Marcel to come with them. But Marcel had other plans he just finished his studies, started a well-paying job and a girlfriend. Nevertheless after his father had a heart attack, decided to support his family and also joined them in a camp for immigrants near Haifa. He served in the Israeli army in 1951, and later worked as a banker for many years.
I have written this Holocaust survival story about Marcel Goldman as he has been a friend of my father for many years, and knows him personally.
